Is the video surveillance market ready for 8K cameras?

This year, 2025, marks 29 years since the invention of the first network camera, the AXIS NetEye 200. Since then, video surveillance technology has evolved dramatically. Now, 8K cameras are generating a lot of interest with their unrivaled image quality, but is the industry ready? More importantly, does 8K offer real security benefits that justify its adoption? 

The advantages of 8K security cameras 

As camera technology evolves, the 8K resolution is establishing itself as a new standard in ultra-high-definition surveillance. But what are the real advantages of 8K security cameras? 

Images sharper than ever 

To understand the importance of 8K cameras, it is important to put their image quality in perspective. With a resolution of 7680 x 4320 pixels, which offers an impressive 33 million pixels per frame, 30 frames per second, 8K cameras offer four times the resolution of 4K. This impressive level of detail enables 8K cameras to capture incredibly sharp images, making it easy to identify people or objects that would otherwise be difficult to distinguish in low-resolution images.

The ultra-high definition images offered by 8K cameras, such as AXIS Q1809-LE Bullet Camera, are invaluable for monitoring large open spaces such as stadiums, airports and city centers. Some of the key benefits for surveillance?

In addition, functions such as electronic image stabilization help to maintain consistent video quality, even in situations where the camera is exposed to vibrations, such as in sports stadiums. This functionality not only ensures sharp and stable recordings, but also helps to avoid additional bandwidth consumption caused by motion and shake-induced distortions. 

For certain applications, it's clear that 8K has a significant advantage, but that doesn't mean it's the most practical fit everywhere.  

Key considerations before deploying 8K security cameras 

Although 8K cameras offer impressive image quality, the adoption of this technology is not only based on resolution, but also includes practical considerations affecting usability, infrastructure and cost.  

Do you need 8K cameras? It depends.  

The detailed capture of 8K cameras can be beneficial in certain scenarios, but in many cases, 4K resolution is more than sufficient to capture useful images. In addition, in certain lighting conditions, 4K cameras can generate more useful images, thanks to their pixel size and processing capabilities.  

Infrastructure upgrade for 8K  

Even when there are clear advantages to the additional detail offered by an 8K camera, there are some challenges that arise with the adoption of these cameras for the video surveillance. More pixels means more data, a lot more. Even traditional video surveillance systems can struggle with bandwidth and storage limitations. Adding 8K cameras often requires substantial upgrades to network infrastructure and storage capacity, which is often a costly and time-consuming task.  

And then we have the availability of compatible monitoring and recording devices. While 8K displays are becoming more common in consumer markets, the same cannot be said for surveillance monitors and recording equipment. As a result, integrating 8K cameras into existing video surveillance can mean rethinking not just the cameras, but the entire video ecosystem, adding cost and complexity to the upgrade. 

What will happen next?  

8K as part of a total video surveillance strategy 

In environments where capturing minute details at a distance is critical, e.g. large-scale facilities or critical infrastructure, the additional resolution can be a significant advantage. At the same time, security decision-makers must also weigh factors such as infrastructure compatibility, practicality and cost. In many cases, 4K remains the resolution of choice due to its balance of image quality, storage efficiency and performance in various lighting conditions.

For security professionals thinking about adopting 8K right now, the key questions are:  

  • What operational challenges does 8K solve that 4K cannot?
  • What does your existing infrastructure need to support data and processing demands?
  • Does the higher resolution justify the cost of upgrades? 

But even when the answer to that last question is "not yet," the future of video surveillance undoubtedly lies in higher resolutions such as 8K.  

Outlook: Gradual and use-case based adoption 

In the near future, 8K adoption is likely to be gradual and use-case based, but the trajectory of technological advancement suggests that higher resolutions will play an increasing role in the future of camera surveillance. While the overall video surveillance market will not adapt as quickly as the large, open, crowded installations where 8K cameras are already proving to be a powerful tool, the groundwork is already being laid for eventual broader integration. As technology advances and costs come down, barriers to adoption will decrease, making 8K cameras a more viable option for increasingly efficient and effective security solutions.
